Supervising projects is a complex activity that involves dealing with four constant variables: cost, timing, duration and quality. A bit more challenging goal is to optimize work organization and resource allocation. Look at your project and you will see that it needs people, finance and equipment to give end results. To manage projects effectively one should work on quite a few factors. You can look through a few of these factors below:

- Task setting and reviewing progress.

- Managing risks. Most feature a certain level of risk.

- Assigning and supervising resources.

- Understanding the product you want to get when the project is finished.

- Controlling what is going on: giving out tasks, controlling the work-in-progress.

- Assuaring adequate quality.

- Dealing with change. Circumstances change. When you begin the project, you should forsee how it will develop with time.

- Talking to those involved with the project.

To handle these elements you can employ pencil and a notepad or perhaps MS EXCEL. However, you get some interesting advantages if you decide to use project tracking software:

- Task are smoothly assigned to dates and times. The length of work can be adjusted by the program depending on the workload data. You can define work calendars for various employees. Managing work-in-progress also becomes less of a problem.

- Coordinating a few projects with different prerequisites. Project tracking software allows project managers to seea larger picture and collect information on a number of projects.

- Critical path is clearly visible. The critical path is a primary notion in project management. If a task on the critical path lasts more time than expected, dates of work on other tasks will be altered. At the same time other tasks that lie outside the critical path can take less or more time without changing the timing of other activities in this project.

- Letting everybody involved know what is going on. The more intricate are the project needs, the more of them have to be talked about. Groupware productivity tracking software enables each participant to be on the same page at any given point in time.

Is it always necessary to employ task tracking software?

Like any software solution, project tracking software has its limitation. It delivers the greatest value when employed for several big projects. Small projects can be managed using a spreadsheet program which helps you save on overhead costs of employing fairy complicated software.
