Kiev is the city where the new and the ancient create excellent opportunities for cultural and aesthetic tourism. However, before you become a visitor to this fantastic city, take your time to decide on at least 2 questions: accommodation and transport.
Let us consider choosing an apartment. Depending on what you can afford and your tastes, you could either choose to stay in a Kiev hotel, or rent an apartment. Count the stars on Kiev hotels to estimate the quality of the service and accommodation and the price you are willing to pay for it.
Kyiv has several five and four star hotels. There are literary dozens of less chic Kiev accommodation opportunities. A five star hotel will cost you around $400-850 per 24 hrs, four star hotels will cost $150-$500, three stars will cost you about $70-300, two stars will cost from $50 to 120 and 1 star hotels cost around 25-100 per 24 hours.
There exist also several hostels in the city for students and young people. In an ordinary hostel you can have unpretentious but clean accommodation facilities and some beds in one room.
If you want to spare some money, you might want to rent an apartment. Instead of a small hotel room for about $90-150 you can get an excellent apartment in the downtown. Of course few people come to Kyiv to spend their time indoors. The megalopolis provides lots of great places of interest if you can get around. Do not worry, though. The system of public transport is fairly appropriate.
The most comfortable way of moving around is Kiev taxis. the driver will take you from the station to your hotel or apartment for less than $35. Generally, for a foreigner, the taxi service should be reasonably inexpensive. It is easy to taxi Kiev around. Nevertheless, in case you do not plan on using only taxis in Kyiv, the city offers lots of transportation options.
First of all, it is the subway that can get you almost anywhere in the city. It is very suitable when you have to travel large distances during hot hours when there are traffic jams on the roads. Second, there are buses, trolley busses and trams. These are quite cheep: you pay a fixed fee to travel any distance. However, they are not very regular. Third, you can travel afoot or use Kiev's special transport - funicular that escalates the shore of the Dnieper. At last, you can always walk around.
